Single Fuel 600kw Biogas Generator

For sites with stable biogas composition (CH₄ 45%–60%), China-based Kecheng builds the Single Fuel 600kW Biogas Generator – no natural gas blending, no dual-fuel compromise. Fixed compression ratio and ignition timing yield 42% electrical efficiency, 0.32 m³/kWh gas consumption. H₂S tolerance 500 ppm. Eliminates knock, misfire, and efficiency drift common in convertible units.

Kecheng (Shandong Kecheng Electric Power Equipment Co., Ltd., China) is a professional manufacturer of the Single Fuel 600kW Biogas Generator from China. Unlike dual-fuel generators that sacrifice efficiency for fuel flexibility, this unit’s engine is purpose-built for biogas alone. The piston crown, valve timing, and spark plug gap are fixed for 45%–60% methane. A dedicated knock sensor and CH₄ monitor protect against gas quality deviations. The package includes a biogas pretreatment skid (desulfurization, dehumidification, 5μm filtration), a Stamford or Marathon alternator, and a PLC that logs gas composition hourly. Every unit is tested at full load on real biogas before leaving the factory. Price includes on‑site commissioning, operator training, and 2‑year warranty.

When to Choose Single Fuel Over Dual Fuel

Your Situation Recommended Type
Biogas CH₄ stays between 45%–60% year-round Single fuel – lower operating cost, higher efficiency
CH₄ varies from 30% to 70% or you may use natural gas Dual fuel – but expect 5–8% lower efficiency on biogas
You need maximum kWh per m³ of biogas Single fuel (42% vs 34–36% for dual on biogas)
You can tolerate occasional engine knock and higher maintenance Dual fuel may suffice

Single fuel is not for everyone. But if your digester produces consistent gas, the payback period versus dual fuel is typically 12–18 months from fuel savings alone.

What Happens Inside a Single Fuel Biogas Engine

- Compression ratio – Set at 12.5:1 (higher than dual-fuel’s 10:1), extracting more work from the same methane molecule.

- Ignition timing – Fixed at 28° BTDC for 50% CH₄; the knock sensor retards by up to 5° if needed.

- Air-fuel ratio – Closed-loop lambda control maintains stoichiometric mixture only for biogas; no adaptation for other gases.

- Valve seat material – Stellite alloy to resist H₂S corrosion without the need for frequent lash adjustments.

These design choices explain why a single fuel unit runs cooler, cleaner, and longer than a dual-fuel unit forced to run on biogas.

Three Risks of Using Biogas in Dual-Fuel Generators

1. Knock damage – Methane concentration drops → flame speed changes → detonation → cracked pistons.

2. Lube oil acidification – H₂S slips past rings when engine is not optimized for biogas → oil change every 200 hours.

3. Catalyst poisoning – Dual-fuel engines often use three-way catalysts incompatible with siloxanes and high H₂S.

Our single fuel unit avoids all three by design. No catalyst required. Oil change interval: 400 hours.

Pre‑Delivery Gas Quality Assessment

Kecheng does not ship a single fuel generator without verifying your biogas. We provide a free gas sampling kit (canister + lab analysis) with your order. If CH₄ falls below 45% for more than 5% of the time, we recommend adding a small natural gas blending skid or choosing our dual-fuel model instead. No surprises.

Cost Comparison Over 5 Years (600kW, 8,000 hrs/year)

Item Single Fuel Dual Fuel (running on biogas)
Fuel consumption (m³/year) 1,536,000 1,920,000 (20% more)
Annual fuel cost (biogas valued at $0.05/m³) $76,800 $96,000
Oil changes (labor + oil) $3,200 (8 changes) $6,400 (16 changes)
Spark plugs $800 (8 changes) $1,600 (12 changes)
Major overhaul year Year 8 Year 5
5-year operating cost ~$420,000 ~$530,000
Single fuel saves approximately $22,000 per year in consumables alone.

Maintenance Difference

- Single fuel – Oil every 400h (mineral oil acceptable). Spark plugs every 1,000h. Valve check every 2,000h.

- Dual fuel on biogas – Oil every 200h (synthetic required). Spark plugs every 600h. Valve check every 1,000h. Injector cleaning every 1,500h.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I later convert this single fuel unit to run on natural gas?

A: No. The combustion chamber, piston, and ignition system are different. Conversion requires replacing the cylinder head, pistons, and control unit – cost is 60% of a new generator. Not economical.

Q: What if my biogas CH₄ occasionally drops to 42%?

A: The PLC will gradually reduce load to maintain stable combustion. At 42% CH₄, maximum load is 400kW. Below 40% for 5 minutes, the unit shuts down automatically. We recommend a small buffer tank to smooth out short-term dips.

Q: Does this generator qualify for green certificates or carbon credits?

A: Yes. Because it uses 100% renewable biogas (no fossil fuel blending), it meets stricter criteria for many green tariff programs and voluntary carbon standards (Gold Standard, VCS). We provide emissions and gas consumption logs for verification.

Q: How much space is needed for the pretreatment skid?

A: The standard skid is 2.5m × 1.8m. Additional space for desulfurizer media storage: 1m². Overall footprint including generator (open skid) is about 6m × 3m.

Q: What is the typical lead time for a custom‑spec unit?

A: Standard 600kW unit (400/230V, 50Hz) ships in 30 days. Custom voltage (6.6kV, 11kV) or tropicalization adds 15 days.

Case in Point

A pig farm in Zhejiang, China, replaced a 10‑year‑old dual‑fuel generator (running on biogas) with our single fuel 600kW unit. After 6 months: fuel consumption dropped from 0.38 to 0.31 m³/kWh. Oil change interval extended from 200 to 420 hours. Annual maintenance cost reduced by $18,000. The operator no longer needs to add 5% natural gas to stabilize combustion – pure biogas runs smoothly.
